Dr Eknath Pawar, dean, B J Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital, on Monday said that efforts were underway to set up a police chowky at the campus premises as there has been a demand for the same.

“This is a long standing demand that will address security needs of the state-run government hospital. Over the years there have been attacks on doctors by relatives of patients and the Police Commissionerate had previously asked hospital authorities to identify a place within the premises. A chowky on the campus will help prevent untoward incidents,” Dr Pawar said.

There was a sharp decline in the number of surgeries registered at Sassoon General Hospital on Monday as the resident doctors’ strike entered its seventh day. Dr Pawar said the government hospital recorded only 18 major and 28 minor operations.

Around 400 resident doctors — who have joined their counterparts across other units of Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors to protest against the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata — continued their stir and on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan tied rakhis on the wrists of the dean and other officials at the college.

A comparative analysis of the number of patients who visited the outpatient department showed that on August 19, 2023 there were 1,670 patients in the OPD at Sassoon General Hospital. However, on Monday there were 832 patients in the OPD. As against 6,292 lab investigations at the biochemistry department on August 19, 2023, Sassoon General Hospital was able to conduct 3,051 investigations. On Monday, only 11 deliveries were conducted.

Meanwhile, a Central team of MARD doctors was in New Delhi to press for their demands.
