The state legislature on Friday passed the Bill to rename the Pune University after  social reformer Savitribai Phule.

The Maharashtra University Amendment Bill 2013 was earlier passed by the Legislative Assembly.

After the Council unanimously passed the Bill, Sunil Tatkare of the NCP demanded that Solapur University be named after Ahalyabai Holkar. Some members then suggested that Mumbai and North Maharashtra University be named after Rajamata Jijau (Shivaji’s mother) and Bahinabai Choudhay (famous Marathi poetess), respectively.

Chairman Shivajirao Deshmukh took note of this and instructed Higher Education Minister Vinod Tawade to look into the
demands.
