Man shoots self after losing Rs 23 lakh in fraud, critical; FIR registered

A 33-year-old man shot himself after losing Rs 23 lakh in an investment fraud in Bhandup early Thursday, police said.

The man, Manoj Bhosle, has been admitted to a hospital and is in critical condition, while the police have registered a case of abetment to suicide.

According to police, Bhosle invested Rs 23 lakh belonging to him and some other investors with one Jay Ghugal who allegedly fled with the money.

Dattatray Khandagle, senior inspector of Bhandup police station, said that they registered an FIR against Ghugal and are trying to trace him.

As per the FIR, Bhosle, a loading worker, along with his wife and son, resides in Bhandup and knew Ghugal who invested in the share market on behalf of others from his residence. Ghugal had promised Bhosle anywhere between 10 and 50 per cent return on investment.

Bhosle invested a total of Rs 23 lakh that included 14 lakh belonging to him, Rs 5 lakh belonging to his brother and Rs 4 lakh belonging to his mother-in-law.

Initially, Ghugal provided them high return on investment but later he stopped paying the interest, the FIR read.

Apart from Bhosle, Ghugal had allegedly taken money from others in the locality who had started approaching him to pay interest.

Nearly six months back, Ghugal went missing with all the money following which a complaint was given to the Bhandup police but nothing much came out of it.

As per Bhosle’s wife, he was under stress over the past six months.

On Wednesday, he went out to drink but did not return home till 12.30 am. He did not attend calls from his wife.

Later, he sent audio clips and a video to his wife and brother asking them to take care of themselves as he was ending his life. Based on the video, they located him at a spot in Bhandup where he was found sitting with a gun in his hand, police said.

The wife and son counselled him and started taking him to his house when he suddenly ran down again and shot himself in the head following which he was rushed to the Fortis hospital.

An officer said that he is currently in the ICU and his condition is critical.

The police are looking for the accused person and sent a team to Surat to look for him.
