The man is alleged to have sexually harassed a 10-year-old girl in the central suburbs of the city. (Representational) While granting bail to a 56-year-old badminton coach and former player booked for alleged sexual harassment of a minor student, a special court in Mumbai has said that even though he relied on his participation in national and international competitions to claim innocence, it cannot be said that a person participating in various competitions cannot commit such an offence.
The man is alleged to have sexually harassed a 10-year-old girl in the central suburbs of the city. The complaint said that in March-April, he called the girl to the dressing room, made her sit on his lap and kissed her cheeks and forehead. He was arrested earlier this week and produced before the special court.
In his bail plea, the man said he was a national champion and had participated in state- and international- level badminton competitions. He also submitted that he had been a coach for the past three decades. His plea said there was no evidence that he had committed such an offence and that he was not present at the time at the spot where the incident was said to have taken place. Among the submissions made by the accused was also that he had participation certificates for various badminton competitions.
“The applicant has relied on various certificates of his participation in badminton competitions. The same are not relevant for deciding the present bail application as no inference can be drawn that a person participating in various competitions cannot commit any offence as alleged by the victim,” the court said Wednesday.
The court said that it was instead considering the allegations and the punishment for the offences to conclude that his further custody was not required and that the investigation could be completed without keeping him behind bars. It granted him bail with conditions.
