13-year-old girl in juvenile home kidnapped him: Police
A baby boy kidnapped in April from Grant Road in April was found safe and sound in a Bhayander slum on Thursday. Police, acting on information provided by a 13-year-old girl who allegedly kidnapped the boy, traced him to the shanty where the girl had taken refuge for a while after telling the family that she and the baby were orphans.
D B Marg police said on Saturday the girl, who had been sent to a remand home for juvenile delinquents in Dongri for a similar crime last month, had been interrogated and she told them about the shanty where she had left the baby.
The girl had run away from her house in Malwani and had returned after weeks, her mother told police.
In late April, the girl, after she had run away from her parents, approached Smita and Vijay Khandekar, labourers from Nagpur who had come to the city with their infant son in search of work and were living on the Grant Road skywalk. The girl told them she was an orphan and asked them if she could live with them. The Khandekars gave her shelter. At 11 am on April 22,when Smita had gone to the public toilet to bathe, the accused fled with the child.
Police said the girl then sought refuge with Sher and Umadevi Singh, who live in a shanty near Bhayander railway station.
She told them she and the boy were orphans and needed care. The Singhs took them in. Two days later, the girl left the child with the Singhs and fled. She shortly returned to her parents.
Last month, she abducted a one-and-a-half-year old girl in Matunga. This time her mother handed her over to police and she was charged with kidnapping and sent to Dongri Childrens Home.
The D B Marg police were alerted about her detention for kidnapping and interrogated her. She revealed the whereabouts of Khandekars son. On Thursday, the boys parents and the police reached Singhs home in Kashimira,Mira Road where Smita identified her son.
