AN ATTEMPT-to-murder accused, who was arrested by the Shivaji Nagar police earlier this month, fled from the sessions court premises Tuesday afternoon after a hearing. The Colaba police have registered a case and launched a hunt.
According to police sources, accused Taufiq Zaidi (30), a resident of Shivaji Nagar, was arrested last week after he got into a violent altercation with another local. After police completed their inquiries, Zaidi was remanded in judicial custody and lodged in the Arthur Road jail.
Zaidi was produced at the sessions court Tuesday morning, and his judicial custody was extended till November 6. He was being escorted by a constable of the Local Arms II division in Tardeo. After the magistrate extended his custody, he told the policeman that he wished to apply for bail.
“Zaidi was taken to the lock-up on the court premises, where he filled up the application. A constable then took him to the clerk to submit it. He made Zaidi stand behind him as he spoke to the clerk about submitting the application. The clerk said the magistrate concerned was hearing another case, and that he would have to wait. As the constable turned around to tell this to Zaidi, he found that the accused had disappeared,” said a police officer.
The constable, according to protocol, informed his superiors and a wireless alert was sent out. The Colaba police were informed too, as the court area comes under their jurisdiction. Sources said LA officials would now conduct an inquiry to see if there was any lapse on part of the constable.
