Fifty-five-year-old Dipti Shirke is still in shock. She can’t decide what is more unbelievable; the fact that her husband is dead or the fact that he shot two men, killing one of them, before taking his own life.
“He went in a way that was least expected to us, and that too after dedicating himself whole-heartedly to the force all his life,” said Dipti. Shirke’s last rites were performed at a crematorium in Kherwadi at around 2 pm on Sunday. The cremation was attended by many of his friends and colleagues.
Shirke’s colleagues at the Vakola police station said that he was promoted as an assistant sub inspector five months ago, and was due to be transferred by the end of the month. His family further alleged that he faced a lot of harassment from his superiors but never showed his stress on his face while at home.

“He always had a smile on his face, no matter what. His colleagues know how the senior inspector used to harass and torture my husband. On Saturday, he was finally pushed over the edge. He never got leave when he needed it. Forget my illnesses, even when he himself was sick, he would pop pills and go to work,” claimed Dipti.
Shrike also faced financial stress as he was the sole earning member, said family members. “I remember talking to him about the issue of getting leave, during which he said that he doesn’t even have enough leave available to plan his daughters’ weddings,” alleged a neighbour of the Shirkes.
Family members said that he was enthusiastic in organising functions. He was known to be fond of spicy Konkani food and for being particular about eating his meals on time. Usually, one of his two daughters would take his lunch to the police station every afternoon.
