Assembly begins on stormy note; BJP targets govt on price rise, power and water tariffs

Opposition stages walkout,BJP MLAs wear garlands of onions to vent anger against price rise

The last session of the Delhi Assembly began on a turbulent note as the opposition BJP attempted to corner Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and the government on rising prices and high power and water tariffs. The BJP even staged a walkout before the Congress passed a resolution on the Union government’s food security scheme.

It was just after obituary references that proceedings in the House came to a standstill after BJP MLAs,wearing garlands made of onions and waving posters, demanded action to contain price rise.

Leader of the Opposition V K Malhotra stated that the government seemed totally unconcerned over the issue even as Opposition legislators continued to chant slogans against the Sheila Dikshit government.

Speaker Yoganand Shastri then canceled the Question Hour and adjourned the House for 30 minutes.

On resuming proceedings,Uttam Nagar MLA Mukesh Sharma moved a resolution congratulating UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Union government for passing the Food Security Bill in the Lok Sabha. Malhotra and the BJP immediately protested and claimed the House was not notified of the resolution in advance. While Sharma continued undeterred, the BJP staged a walkout.

However, while the BJP started their protest against rising vegetable prices,it was water scarcity that dominated most of Tuesday’s session. BJP MLA from Dwarka,Pradyuman Rajput stated that his constituency reeled under a water crisis for weeks recently. “I made repeated requests to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and the CM but to little avail. Instead of helping my constituency,a false FIR was lodged against me,” he said.

Rajput then stormed the well of the House with a copy of the FIR intending to hand it over to the Speaker. “He entered the well to hand over the FIR to the Speaker who then had him marshalled out of the House,” BJP Chief Whip Sahab Singh Chauhan said. He added that the act was symbolic of the government’s apathy towards water problems in the city.
