The Khar police arrested five people for allegedly kidnapping a Mira Road resident from a bar in Bandra on Thursday, beating him up and demanding a ransom of Rs 10 lakh for his release. The victim was rescued after his wife alerted the police.
The accused also took Rs 1.85 lakh cash, an iPhone, and a watch worth Rs 35,000 from the victim at the time of the kidnapping, according to the First Information Report (FIR).
The arrested were identified as Viju Manikam Swami alias Tammi Anna, 45, who is the main accused, his sister Jaya, her husband Suhas Raghunath Bagve, 49, their son Priyanshu, 22, and driver Prashant Bhausaheb Jadhav, 37. All the accused are residents of Andheri and Vile Parle. They were produced in court on Friday and remanded in police custody till Monday, officers said.
According to the police, the complainant works in the share market and lives in Mira Road (East) along with his wife, 9-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son. Around 9.30 pm on Thursday, he was kidnapped from Janata Bar in Pali Naka, Bandra (West) by four to five people who took him in a car and confined him at a house in Vile Parle (West). There, they allegedly beat him, threatening to kill the man with a sword, and called his wife demanding a ransom of Rs 10 lakh.
The wife informed the authorities, following which the Juhu police rescued the man. The Khar police registered a case as the victim was allegedly kidnapped from their jurisdiction. According to the complainant, the main accused Tammi Anna used to work with him three years ago. On Thursday, Anna arrived with the others and took him away in an Ertiga car, inside which he was also assaulted.
The accused then forced him to call someone and get them to bring Rs 10 lakh if he did not wish to be murdered. They took him to Anna’s sister’s house at Tata compound in Vile Parle (West) and confined him there. They then repeatedly called the victim’s wife and threatened her to bring Rs 10 lakh even as they beat up the man with a wooden stick, as per the FIR.
The wife said she had only Rs 8 lakh and the accused asked her to bring the money near Alpha market in Irla. Later, she was asked to go near McDonald’s in Andheri, where she waited for a few minutes. The accused then changed the location again and asked her to go near Shopper’s Stop, said a police officer. A person then took the woman to the place where her husband was confined.
Meanwhile, the police were monitoring the wife’s movements. Once they confirmed the victim’s presence at the house, they raided the place and rescued the man, an officer said.
Questioning revealed that the complainant had allegedly taken money from the main accused, his relatives and several others on the pretext of investing in the share market and had not returned the money. The accused were later handed over to the Khar police, who charged them under sections including kidnapping, said a police officer.
