The duo rescued their team’s innings with a 169-run partnership

E Merck lifted the Times Shield ‘E’Division Championship on Saturday,as they beat MTNL by 21 runs in the 45-overs final at the Karnataka ground,Cross Maidan. Meanwhile,a superb all round show by Prashant Mestry,who scored 76 and returned figures of 4-9,helped Ajanta Pharma to ease past IMD by 123 runs to enter the third round of the ‘F’Division Times Shield Cricket Tournament at the Azad Maidan.

Batting first,E Merck did well to reach 240 for 9 in their stipulated overs. After finding themselves at 32-3 at one stage,Merck rallied back with the efforts of fourth-wicket pair Mandar Apten and Rohit Bhalla,who added a valuable 162 runs in 169 balls.

Apte was unlucky to miss his century by a mere two runs,and struck nine fours during his 109-ball innings,while Bhalla hit seven fours in his 81. Leg spinner S Balasubramaniam was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4 for 42.

In reply MTNL could manage to score only 219 in 43.4 overs,with opener Nandkumar Saraf also falling for an unfortunate 98,which was studded with three sixes and eight fours off 101 balls. Mandar Apte took three for 46 while Rohit Bhalla,Vaibhav Sawant,and Atul Kambli captured two wickets each.

A century by Shakeel Shaikh enabled Income-Tax ‘B’ to beat Times Of India by six wickets to enter the next round.
