Apex court notice to varsity V-C

The Supreme Court has issued a notice to Mumbai University Vice-Chancellor Dr Rajan Welukar with respect to a petition challenging his appointment.

The Supreme Court (SC) has issued a notice to Mumbai University Vice-Chancellor Dr Rajan Welukar with respect to a petition challenging his appointment.

The plea was filed by former Rajasthan University Vice-Chancellor A D Sawant. Sawant,who was also a former Pro-Vice Chancellor of University,has questioned Welukar’s qualifications for the post. According to the petitioner,Welukar was a selection grade lecturer and not a professor as specified in the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations.

An SC bench placed the case for hearing on July 2. Notices have also been issued to the state government,Governor,Mumbai University and the Search Committee.

Welukar was not available for comment. Mumbai University registrar said he was not aware of such a notice.

Sawant had filed a separate petition earlier,challenging amendments made by the state to UGC regulations pertaining to the selection Vice-Chancellor. In this petition,he challenged the appointment of VCs of Sant Gadge Maharaj University in Amravati,Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in Aurangabad,SNDT University and universities of Mumbai,Pune,Kolhapur,Lonare,Nagpur,Aurangabad and Nashik.
