The Antop Hill police on Friday said that eve-teasing could have led to the stabbing of 24-year-old Azghar Azizullah Haq Shiyari. Shiyari, who owns a welding shop, was attacked with meat choppers, swords, hockey sticks and stumps by 8-10 persons on Thursday night. While the injured Shiyaris condition is stable, the police said that preliminary investigation has revealed that a few days prior to the incident,Shiyari had been warned after he tried to pursue a girl at Rajeev Gandhi Nagar,Antop Hill.
Senior police inspector Vishnu Deokar said that on Thursday,Shiyari,a resident of Govandi had come to Rajiv Gandhi Nagar to meet his friends Mansoor Ali Sheikh and Shaukat Ali Sheikh. According to Mansoor, the friends were having a cup of tea at a local restaurant when 8-10 boys armed with sharp objects entered the restaurant and ordered Shiyari to accompany them outside.
They forcibly took Shiyari to a place 50 metre from the hotel and assaulted him and fled.
Meanwhile,Shiyaris uncle,Rumi Bhai refuted allegations that his nephew was involved in eve-teasing. The assailants are local goons who terrorise people residing in the locality and extort money. They are politically well-connected and roam around with weapons. Some of the attackers claim that they wield power as they are party workers of certain political parties. When my nephew tried to stand up against them they attacked him, said Rumi Bhai.
The police however denied that the accused were politically affiliated with any party.
