The Mumbai police on Thursday informed the Bombay High Court that the investigation in the murder of Anil Bheda, key witness in the fake encounter case of Ramnarayan Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiya in 2006,has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
On July 20,the court was informed by the state government that DNA tests have proved that parts of a body recovered by the Navi-Mumbai police in Thanes Manor jungle were that of Bheda. Bheda had been missing from his Navi Mumbai home since March 13. His wife Aruna had filed a Habeas Corpus writ in the High Court.
Senior counsel Vijay Pradhan, appearing for Aruna, urged the court to transfer the probe to CBI. The court, however, said that the CID should be given a chance to look into the matter.
Bheda was a crucial witness in the alleged fake encounter of Lakhan Bhaiya, reportedly a Chhota Rajan gang-member. He was scheduled to depose in the case on March 18.
