After missing out on getting a place in NITI Ayog despite being the third largest ally in the NDA, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, which was hopeful of getting a governor post, has been left out. In May this year, former Shiv Sena MP Anandrao Adsul had claimed that Union Minister Amit Shah had offered him a governor’s position for withdrawing his claim on the Amravati Lok Sabha seat, which he represented two times.

On Saturday, President Droupadi Murmu appointed Governors for Rajasthan, Telangana, Maharashtra, Punjab, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Assam, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. However, Adsul was not appointed as governor.

Adsul, however said that he is still hopeful to be appointed as governor in the next round of the appointment. “I was given a commitment by Amit Shah himself. He had held my hand and promised me that I will be appointed as governor. All this happened in front of the Chief Minister (CM Shinde) and DyCM (Fadnavis). Both of them have also sent a proposal to the centre. So I am confident that in the next round I will be appointed as governor,” Adsul told The Indian Express.

“Amit Shah had called me when the seat distribution was on for the Lok Sabha polls. He asked me not to contest from Amravati. I told him that the contestant they were planning to field could not win and she had a court case pending. Shah told me that they will take care of it. He asked me what I want and then offered to make me a Governor,” Adsul who represented the Amravati Lok Sabha seat in 2009 and 2014 had said in May this year.

In 2019, he was defeated by NCP-backed independent Navneet Rana, who has now switched to the BJP. Adsul was said to have been keen on contesting the seat on a Shiv Sena ticket but backed out due to BJP’s preference for Rana. Rana lost the Amravati seat in the recently held LS polls.

Since 2014, no Sena veteran has been appointed as governor.

Meanwhile, MLC Eknath Khadse, who was with NCP (Sharad Pawar), was also in the race for gubernatorial position after rejoining the BJP. However, his joining the BJP itself was stalled.
