A 40-year-old man arrested by the Amboli police on charges of raping two minors has reportedly confessed to committing four to five “similar such cases” in the past. The police, however, are facing a problem in identifying the other girls. Accused, Shahzad Ansari, a welder, had been earlier arrested for allegedly molesting a minor in 2012 and was out on bail when he committed the crime last week.

Senior police inspector Ramesh Khadtare said they were interrogating the accused. An officer privy to the probe said Ansari had confessed to having sexually assaulted more women. “Sometimes parents keep such things under wraps… We are hoping to track down family members of all other victims,” he said.

The senior inspector said last time Ansari’s father had bailed him out when he was arrested by the Oshiwara police.

This time, however, it will be difficult to get bail as he has been booked for the second time under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSOA).

A team from the Amboli police arrested Ansari after he raped two girls who were playing in a building in Jogeshwari area on October 29. He had allegedly threatened the two and taken them to the fifth floor of the building where he committed the crime. One of the girls had managed to flee and inform her parents but Ansari had fled by then. The parents then approached the Amboli police.
