Akshay Kumar kicks off BMC drive to plant 300 trees along Western Express Highway

To increase Mumbai’s green cover, the city’s civic body started a mega drive on Monday to plant 300 trees along the Western Express Highway between Bandra and Goregaon in the western suburbs.

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar along with Bhushan Gagrani, Municipal Commissioner, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, and Jeetendra Pardeshi, Superintendent of the BMC’s tree department, kicked off the plantation drive.

BMC officials said that full-grown trees of the Bahava species would be planted on both sides of the road. “We have marked tree basins, between Bandra and Goregaon, where we intend to plant these trees. The Bahava trees are smaller in size and grow up to a maximum 20 ft. Therefore they don’t pose any risk of collapsing. The trees are indigenous in nature and grow flowers on them, which will give the entire highway an aesthetic appeal,” Pardeshi told The Indian Express.
