A 20-year-old woman from Kerala, an Agniveer undergoing Naval training at INS Hamla in Mumbai, died by suicide Monday morning. Prima facie, it appears she took the extreme step due to personal reasons, police said. The deceased Aparna Nair came to Mumbai nearly two weeks ago, senior inspector Chimaji Adhav of Malwani police station said. She was putting up at a hostel in Malwani with 15-20 girls, he said. On Monday morning, as per police, Nair’s roommate returned to her room at 10.30 am, but Nair allegedly did not open the door despite repeated knocks. When the door was broken open, they found Nair’s body and rushed her to a hospital where she was declared dead, police said. Adhav said an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been filed and they were investigating. Sources said the woman was seen talking to her relatives over the phone prior to the incident. “We suspect there was some quarrel due to which she took the extreme step. We are waiting for the girl’s family to come to the city after which we will record their detailed statement to get some clarity about the reason behind the extreme step,” an officer added. The Navy also said that an inquiry has been ordered into the incident. “Regret to inform the unfortunate incident of unnatural death of Aparna V Nair, Agniveer Logistics(F&A), age 20, at INS Hamla, Mumbai. An inquiry has been ordered to investigate the incident. Indian Navy extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family,” a statement released by the Navy said.
