A day after he was allegedly assaulted by Shiv Sainiks in the party’s stronghold Lalbaug, Farhan Azmi, son of Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi, said he would write to Commissioner of Police Rakesh Maria demanding an inquiry into why an FIR was not registered against his alleged assailants.
On Saturday afternoon, Azmi had visited a salon in Lalbaug along with his ten-year-old nephew. He parked his vehicle across the street, left his private security guard near the vehicle and was being given a haircut, when his security guard called him.
“I heard raised voices and abusive language and rushed outside, telling the people at the salon to stay with my nephew. Several people had surrounded my guard and when I pushed two of them away, three others pounced on me. They said that no one except (Shiv Sena corporator) Nana Ambole could park at that spot and while I was trying to reason with them, someone shouted in Marathi that a Muslim man was creating a ruckus in a Marathi area,” Azmi said.
Azmi added he took one of his assailants to the Kalachowkie police station, only to find Ambole sitting there. Azmi claimed that Ambole threatened him in the presence of the police officers. “Someone I know contacted Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria. I was assured that an FIR would be registered under Section 295 A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs). However, the police have only registered a Non Cognisable (NC) complaint. Neither me nor my bodyguard was subjected to medical tests. I am writing to the police commissioner, asking him to question the concerned officers about this,” said Azmi.
Shiv Sena Member of Parliament (MP) Anil Desai denied any communal angle to the incident. “Neither Farhan Azmi nor Abu Asim Azmi are able to do anything politically or socially. Hence, they try to give a communal colour to everything. They are not even able to serve the cause of the community that they belong to,” Desai said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) Ashok Dudhe said, “We have registered an NC based on the statement given by Azmi. There was no mention of any communal angle in it. It was an issue over parking.”
