A 48-year-old Police Naik attempted suicide inside Tilak Nagar police station on Monday afternoon by consuming bleach allegedly after an argument with his senior officer.
The constable Madhukar Desai worked in the dispatch unit of the police station for more than four years and was reportedly late for work.
Officers privy to the investigation said that Desai had written four sides of his two page suicide note.
“The note was handwritten in Marathi and was recovered from his uniform’s breast pocket. It was addressed to the Assistant commissioner of police of the division and alleged of the harassment caused by his ‘senior and his orderly’.
When Desai was asked at Rajawadi hospital about the letter, he told us that he had sent the same letter by post earlier in the day to the Mumbai police commissioner, the regional additional commissioner of police and the zonal deputy commissioner of police and then reported for his duty,” said a senior investigator.
Zonal Deputy Commissioner of P Sangramsinh Nishandar, however, denied tha Desai ever posted any such letters and said that the entire incident is under investigation.
As per the officers at the Tilak Nagar police station, Desai had come to the police station some time after noon on Monday.
“An argument took place between Desai with Senior Police Inspector Vijay Khaire and his orderly Sandeep Shirke. Shortly after this, a diary entry was made marking Desai absent. This is not the first time that arguments have taken place between officers and Khaire at the police station,” claims an officer who was on day duty at the Tilak Nagar police station.
Following the argument, investigators claim that Desai retired to his office on the first floor of the police station and consumed a 25 ml bottle of a bleaching liquid.
“Desai’s colleague found him sitting in his uniform and on a chair, looking unconscious. When Desai was asked what the matter was, he is believed to have replied saying that he consumed ‘Ala’, a stain cleaner,” said another officer who rushed Desai to the nearby Rajawadi hospital where he was admitted around 1.15 pm.
“I have deputed an assistant commissioner of police rank officer to carry out an inquiry and submit the report in 48 hours. The inquiry will be conducted impartially,” said Manoj Lohiya, additional commissioner of police (east region).
The incident comes less than a year after an assistant sub inspector of police Dilip Shirke, shot himself after shooting his superior at the Vakola police station on May 2. Desai is being treated at Rajawadi hospital and is believed to be stable, doctors said.
A doctor said Desai is under observation and is likely to be discharged on Tuesday. Senior police inspector Vijay Khaire of Tilak Nagar police station was unavailable for comment. Desai, a resident of Panvel has two children.
