After being accused of removing valuable paintings from the Mafatlal residence,Atulya Mafatlals second wife Sheetal told the Gamdevi police that she has kept the paintings secure and they can be collected whenever desired.
According to the Gamdevi police, last month,Atulyas 19-year-old daughter Marushka had given a written application to the police claiming that her stepmother had stolen over 40 expensive paintings by famous artists, including FN Souza,SH Raza,MF Husain,Anjoli Ela Menon,Jamini Roy and Jehangir Sabawala, besides familys silver and jewellery worth over Rs 50 crore from Mafatlal bungalow.
The police then summoned Sheetal to record her statement. Sheetal told us since she was not at home for a long period and her husband was in London, she had taken the paintings to a company that keeps them secure from moisture and dirt as nobody else was there to take care of them, said an officer from the Gamdevi police station. We will verify Sheetals claims and approach the company which has the paintings, said Anil Kumbhare, deputy commissioner of police (Zone 2).
According to Marukshas application, her father, who was suffering from colon cancer, has been recently operated upon. In her first written complaint to the Gamdevi police on July 12,Marushka,who also resides at Mafatlal bungalow on Altamount Road, said that on July 11 she found her stepmother packing the paintings, and when she objected,Sheetal told her the art from the second floor of their residence will not be removed. However, later it was gone too.
