’93 blast accused held for assault

The Mankhurd police on Wednesday arrested Shahnawaz Khan,an accused in the 1993 serial bomb blasts case,on charges of assaulting another person with a chopper on December 8 along with three others.

The Mankhurd police on Wednesday arrested Shahnawaz Khan,an accused in the 1993 serial bomb blasts case,on charges of assaulting another person with a chopper on December 8 along with three others.

Officers probing the case believe a property dispute or personal enmity could be behind the assault as the accused and the complainant are relatives. Police said they have booked Khan under Section 326 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means),Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt),Section 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke peace),Section 506 (criminal intimidation) and Section 34 (common intent) of the Indian Penal Code.

While Khan has been arrested, his three accomplices have not yet been nabbed.

The incident took place on December 8,when Akram Fakhri was on his way from Kurla to Mumbra. “Akram was travelling towards Mumbra on the Sion-Panvel Highway when he was assaulted with a chopper near Mankhurd. Soon after,he was rushed to Shatabdi Hospital,” said senior police inspector Shankarsingh Rajput of Mankhurd police station.

Rajput said Khan was arrested after the complainant identified him. The hunt for his accomplices — brother Azim Khan and nephews Altamash Khan and Jaby Yaya Khan — is still on,the officer said.

While the police claim Khan was arrested on the basis of the victim’s complaint,Akram alleged that the arrest was made only after senior officers intervened. “They did not arrest him when I registered an FIR. It was only after I wrote to senior officers that the police arrested Khan,” said Akram.

Meanwhile, officers have denied the charges and said Akram may be using the assault to settle scores with Khan.

Khan’s appeal against his conviction by the TADA court in the 1993 bomb blast case is still pending in the Supreme Court.
