80-yr-old Jal wins a thriller

Tengra kicked off his campaign with a nailbiting 176-171 win over Kabil Badami of Bombay Gymkhana.

Octogenarian Jal Singaporevala and Farhad Tengra of Elphinstone Cricket Club snatched thrilling wins to give the SPG-Park Club Open Billiards Handicap Tournament an explosive start on Wednesday.

Gymkhana’s Kishore Laungani,four decades his junior,158-141 in the exciting match in Group F.

Tengra kicked off his campaign with a nailbiting 176-171 win over Kabil Badami of Bombay Gymkhana in the one hour time-format Group C round robin tie,in the closest match of the day. Later,he overcame Manjeet Singh Bhomar of North Indian Association to enhance his hopes of making it to the next phase.

Tengra inspired a slew of ECC wins as his club mates Mahesh Jagdale,who hit a break of 77,Iqbal Rokadia also registered impressive wins.

While Yash Rungta of Kandivali won all his three ties in Group H to qualify for the next phase,Pramod Mhatre of Park Club and

Sushrut Pandya of PJ Hindu Gymkhana earned two wins apiece to enhance their hopes of qualifying from their respective

groups. The tournament includes a one hour time-format round robin in the first phase that has 16 groups of four players each. Two players from each group will qualify for a knock out round of 32 that will be played in the one hour time format.
