8,000 monthly speed violations in Mumbai, officials warn of action

Around 8,000 speed violations are recorded in a month in the city, Joint Commissioner of Traffic Police (Mumbai) Praveen Padwal said on Tuesday. Padwal was speaking at the launch of the ‘Slow Down- Speed Observation Study Report’.
The report is an initiative of the United Way Mumbai, a non-profit, in collaboration with Mumbai Police’s Traffic Control Branch, and IIT Bombay.
“In a month, we see 8,000 speed violations captured by 52 cameras across the city. Last year, we recorded 364 road crash cases in Mumbai. Of these, 44 per cent involved pedestrians, 35 per cent two-wheelers, and 10 per cent involved pillion riders. In view of the data, we are taking several strict enforcement drives against those violating rules,” he said.
Transport Commissioner of Maharashtra Vivek Bhimanwa, who was also present at the event, underlined: “The dream of becoming a global power can’t be achieved while being negligent of road safety.” He also spoke of a proposal to the government to make the offense of rash driving and those committed by repeat offenders “non-bailable”.
The survey for the report was conducted at 20 locations across the city. Speed, unregulated merging sections, lack of adequate infrastructure, and illegal parking have been counted as contributing factors in road crashes.
“We are also taking strict action against drunken driving. In the last three months, we have taken action against 242 drunk drivers. However, in addition to this, we also need an attitudinal change within citizens,” Padwal said at the event.
