The defence lawyer in the 2006 serial train blasts case on Wednesday raised doubts on the credibility of a panch witness and alleged that he was a stock witness of the Anti terrorism Squad (ATS). He said the panch witness examined by the prosecution in the blasts case was a panch witness in another case pertaining to counterfeit notes, which was initially investigated by the ATS and later by the National Investigating Agency (NIA).
Defence counsel Wahab Khan pointed out that the witness was lowering his credibility as he was under the influence of the agency. However, the witness denied that he had acted as a panch witness only in the train blasts case.
The defence pressed for calling official records of the counterfeit case and the court issued summons to ATS to produce them. If proved that he was the panch witness in both the cases, the court can issue perjury notice against the witness, he said. The panch witness was present at the house of the suspects brother Dr Tanveer Ansari, from where the ATS had seized banned literature and incriminating materials.
