A 65-year-old woman and a five-year-old girl were killed and two more injured after a car ranover them at Ghatkopar on Sunday evening.
The accident took place around 6 pm when the aarti before Ganesh visarjan was in progress near the Gangawadi Cooperative Society in Ghatkopar. Police said the accused, Vilas Kshirsagar, a local resident, left a few minutes before the ritual was to end. While trying to remove his car from a narrow lane, he allegedly knocked down Kalavati Pasharkar, 65, and Tanushka Phale, 5. Two other local residents too came under the rear wheel. They were admitted to Rajawadi hospital. They are said to be out of danger.
Kshirsagar, a teacher, fled the spot. He later surrendered at the Ghatkopar police station. Senior Inspector Vyenkat Patil said a case had been registered under sections 304(A) (death due to negligence), 279 (rash and negligent driving), 338 (causing grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 134 and 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Police have sent Kshirsagar’s blood samples for tests to find out if he was under the influence of alcohol when the incident took place.
