Police have arrested a 42-year-old man for allegedly trying to sexually assault his neighbour’s 11-year-old daughter at his Dombivali residence on Friday evening.

According to the Ram Nagar police in Dombivali, the accused is a plumber and also a part-time activist for a political party at a local level.

“The accused stays in Dombivali and the victim stays next door. On Friday evening, the victim went running to her house, crying uncontrollably, and told her mother that the accused had allegedly tried to sexually assault her. Her mother immediately approached us and we initiated investigations into the matter,” said a police officer.

The officer added that a medical examination of the victim was done at the Thane Civil Hospital after which a woman officer recorded her statement.

“In her statement, the victim said she was playing outside her house when the accused called her and took her inside his house. There was no one else in the house, and he allegedly tried to sodomise her. However, the victim started crying loudly, which made the accused lose his nerve and he let her go. The victim ran straight to her mother and told her what had happened,” said the officer.

After recording the victim’s statement, the police registered a case against the accused and picked him up from his residence late Friday night. He was placed under arrest after being questioned and has been booked for unnatural sex under the Indian Penal Code as well as for sexual assault under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. After being produced in court on Saturday, he was remanded in police custody for six days.

In her statement, the victim has told the police that she knew the accused well and that he had never tried to assault her before. The police are now trying to find out whether he has similarly targeted other minor girls in the locality in the past.
