35-year-old woman stabbed at home in Mankhurd,dies

A 35-year-old woman was repeatedly stabbed at her house in Mankhurd Tuesday afternoon. The unidentified accused also allegedly tried to set the woman on fire after stabbing her. The victim later succumbed to injuries at a hospital where she was being treated.

Sufiya lived with her 12-year-old son in Lallubhai area in Mankhurd. Her son was at school at the time of the incident. Sufiya’s elder son (17),studies in Ratnagiri. “Following the death of her husband,the woman married his younger brother. Her second husband later deserted her,” said an officer from Mankhurd police station.

Police said the accused,who they suspect might be known to the woman,attacked her with a sharp weapon. He then dragged her to the bed and tried to set it on fire,they added. The mattress of the bed was found partially burnt.

“The incident came to light when residents saw smoke emanating from her residence. They dialled the fire brigade,who found the door locked on reaching the spot. When fire brigade officials broke open the door open,they found the woman lying injured,” said Shankarsingh Rajput,senior inspector of Mankhurd police station.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital,where she succumbed to her injuries,police said.

Police said there were no signs of forced entry. They have ruled out the possibility of robbery being a motive. “We have taken finger prints from the scene of crime and will match it with the suspects. We have booked the accused for murder,” said the officer.
