A TRIP to the beach to play cricket turned tragic for eight men after three of them drowned at Aksa beach Sunday. Malwani police identified the deceased as Mayuresh Naik (23),a first year student,Darshan Gadvi (23),an HSC student and Rakesh Nalavade (23),a call centre employee. People and a lifeguard who jumped into the sea rescued another person who was part of the group.
Police said the eight men,of Rajanpada area in Malad (West),had visited Aksa beach every Sunday for the past two years for a game of cricket. They used to usually play from 2 pm to 5 pm but decided to go in the morning on May 5,police added.
When the men reached the beach,they noticed high tide and abandoned the plan to play cricket. However,four of them Naik,Gadvi,Nalavade and Sandesh Mungekar (25) decided to go swimming around 9 am.Within minutes,the four were caught unawares by high waves and began shouting for help. A lifeguard at the beach said,We called some of the stall owners on the beach and plunged into the sea. We managed to pull out two men and took them to hospital. While Sandesh survived,Gadvi was declared brought dead, said a lifeguard at Aksa beach.
It all happened so suddenly that we did not even know. One second we saw them and the next second,they were gone, said Sandeshs brother Nilesh Mungekar.
The fire brigade was informed of the mishap. We fished out the bodies of Mayuresh and Rakesh, said assistant divisional fire officer Abhay Sawant. Police have registered a case of accidental death.
