The BMC has put in force a 25 per cent water supply cut in the island city and western suburbs after a pipeline of 1,800-mm thickness (72 inches) from Tansa lake burst at Vartak Nagar in Thane on Monday afternoon. A 10 per cent cut in the eastern suburbs has also been enforced.
The water supply cuts will last till August 20, by which time the BMC hopes to have the pipe repaired.
The pipeline burst around 2:30 pm after which the civic body immediately began repair work. Ramesh Bambale, chief engineer of the water supply department, said, “It appears the old pipeline was damaged by wear and tear. We have sent a team of 50 personnel to the spot to fix the leak by Tuesday. Till then, we request residents to use water sparingly.”
On August 13, the BMC withdrew water supply cuts imposed in the city a month ago due to low water levels in the lakes then.
