2023 train firing incident: Court seeks medical papers of dismissed RPF cop undergoing treatment in mental hospital

A sessions court on Tuesday directed the Thane Central Jail superintendent to produce medical papers of dismissed Railway Police Force (RPF) constable Chetansinh Choudhary, facing trial for the murder of his senior colleague and three passengers on a train in 2023.
While the prosecution was examining the fifth witness in the case, Narendra Parmar, an RPF colleague of Choudhary, who was on the train on July 31, 2023, when the alleged incident took place, the defence sought an adjournment stating that Choudhary is undergoing treatment at the Thane mental hospital from February 20 and recording of evidence should not be conducted in his absence. The prosecution submitted that in the interest of justice, the plea should be allowed.

The court allowed the plea for adjournment directing the superintendent to produce medical papers. The case has been adjourned to March 29.

The fifth witness, Parmar, who was examined on Tuesday told the court that he was informed that Choudhary had shot their senior Meena, while he was on duty in another compartment of the train. He also deposed that he had seen several passengers afraid and Choudhary being “aggressive”.
He also said that he saw him taking a bearded passenger at gun point. He said he thought that he could restrain him but Choudhary was walking among the passengers hence he could not fire. Parmar was also dismissed from service a few months after the incident for “failure to discharge his duty” along with another constable who was on the train.
