Nearly two years after his leg was crushed under a BEST bus, which had to be amputated during treatment, a senior citizen from Gujarat’s Rajkot registered a police complaint against an unidentified driver Thursday.
A senior officer at the Tardeo Police Station said they have initiated an investigation and are attempting to gather information about the driver and conductor involved in the accident involving a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport bus plying on route number 124 in November 2023.
The police said the First Information Report (FIR) was registered under sections 338 (involves causing grievous hurt by rashly or negligently endangering others’ life or safety) and 279 (rash and negligent driving or riding on a public way) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with sections 134 (a) and134 (b) of the Motor Vehicle Act.
According to the police, the complainant, Nitinbhai Manilal Bhojani, 62, who resides in Rajkot, Gujarat, travelled to Mumbai on November 29, 2023, for business purposes, and stayed in a guest house located on Grant Road. After checking in at the hotel at 6 am, he visited the Siddhivinayak Temple and then proceeded to the Mahalaxmi Temple around 10 am.
While returning to his hotel, he stopped at the bus stop at Haji Ali junction in front of Kanishka Hotel. When a BEST bus arrived at around 11.15 am, Bhojani asked the conductor whether it was going to Grant Road. Meanwhile, he kept his leg on the footstep of the bus, but received no response from the conductor or the passengers sitting inside.
Bhojani claimed in the FIR that as the automatic door of the bus started closing and it started moving, he lost balance and fell on the road, and his right leg was crushed under the rear tyre of the vehicle.
The bus stopped after a few metres, and one of the passengers rushed him to the Nair Hospital. His son and relatives in Mumbai were informed about the accident, who shifted Bhojani to the KEM Hospital for better treatment.

According to the FIR, Bhojani underwent surgery at KEM Hospital, but as the infection spread, his family decided to shift him to a hospital in Rajkot. The FIR added that he was shifted from Mumbai on December 5, and admitted to Vedanta Multispecialty Hospital, Rajkot.
His right leg was amputated as the infection spread. He was treated for almost two months at the hospital, and he spent one and a half years in a bed after the accident. He then came to Mumbai, and registered a case against the driver of the BEST bus.
