2 posing as cops rob trader of Rs 12-lakh jewellery

TWO men posing as policemen allegedly robbed a trader of gold jewellery worth Rs 12 lakh at Opera House Thursday evening,police said.

TWO men posing as policemen allegedly robbed a trader of gold jewellery worth Rs 12 lakh at Opera House Thursday evening,police said.

Police said Kashinath Sardar,who works at Solitaire Jewellers in Santacruz,was headed back after a meeting with customers in Opera House after the latter rejected the jewellery. Around 6.30 pm,two men on a motorbike intercepted him on Mama Parmanand Road,said police. The two were dressed in casuals and appeared to be in their late forties,Sardar told police.

“They told Sardar not to spit on the road. When Sardar denied doing so,they said they were policemen and told him to open his bag for checking,” said Ajit Surve,senior inspector,D B Marg police station. “They forced him to reveal its contents — a plastic bag containing jewellery. The men grabbed the plastic bag and fled,” he said.

A compliant has been registered under Sections 34 (common intention),170 (personating a public servant) and 397 (theft) of the IPC.

The police are trying to obtain CCTV footage from shops in the area. “The accused were not wearing police uniform. No eyewitnesses have come forward so far,” he added. The police are also verifying Sardar’s claims.

Officials said the menace of thieves posing as policemen is on the rise. Police stations across the suburbs have been creating awareness about the issue through hoardings.
