2 posing as cops held for molestation, robbery bid

Two men posing as cops, who allegedly tried to rob a group of young men and women and to molest a girl in the group, were arrested Monday after alert traffic policemen who were passing by intervened. The two imposters were nabbed after a chase and handed over to Powai police.

Around 1.20 am Monday, a team of policemen comprising an assistant police inspector and three constables posted with the Sakinaka traffic chowky were returning after enforcing an anti-drink-driving naabandi. They were passing by Powai area, when they noticed a teenage girl standing near the Powai Lake next to some parked autorickshaws.

“We enforce the nakabandi from 11 pm to 1 am four nights a week. When we saw the girl, we suspected that she might be in trouble and approached her. As we got closer, the drivers of the parked autorickshaws fled,” said assistant inspector S Doke.

Doke said the 18-year-old girl told them that she and three of her friends, all of whom work for a catering company, had gone to Powai and were returning home when they were stopped by two men. The duo claimed to be detection officers with Powai police and demanded to search them. While one of the four victims fled, the other three were ‘detained’.

“We did not waste any more time and alerted the Powai police station, after which we followed into the bushes. Seeing us approach, the two impostors tried to flee. They got into an autorickshaw and but we gave chase and intercepted them,” said Doke.

The imposters had allegedly taken away the cellphones of the two victims and molested the girl on the pretext of searching her. They have been identified as Prakash Shinde (37), a resident of Tunga village in Powai and Prakash Kirpe, (38), a resident of Andheri Kurla Road at Marol. Both were charged for impersonation, robbery and molestation, police said.
