The BJP-led Narendra Modi government has announced several trains to increase commercial connectivity with other states as well as within Maharashtra. The railway budget has offered two high-speed trains originating from the city, the Nagpur-Bilaspur and Nagpur-Secunderabad express, which would run at 160-200 kmph and need upgraded infrastructure.
Maharashtra BJP president Devendra Fadnavis said, “Economic and geographical factors contributed to sanction of special high-speed trains from Nagpur. At the outset, it opens up better connectivity with states.”
He explained, “The Nagpur-Bilaspur train will help in connecting Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. The Nagpur-Secunderabad train will connect Maharashtra and Telangana /Andhra Pradesh.”
“Nagpur is emerging as the fastest growing industrial sector,” he said.
Scope of industrial growth in Nagpur is massive and unexplored. These train services consider current requirements. Commercial expansion in a decade will give more impetus to the city, which can become the centre for the east-west and north-south corridors, he felt.
The Congress-NCP government has also been giving importance to the growth potential of Nagpur and had announced a special Vidarbha package. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan six months ago indicated the immense growth potential in Nagpur city because of locational advantage and cosmopolitan outlook and character.
Several Congress and NCP state leaders, however, criticised the Modi government for bestowing special favours to Nagpur, saying it was because it was the RSS headquarters.
Brushing away criticism, BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari said, “The criticism about Nagpur getting more trains because it is the RSS headquarters is absurd. When the budget is drawn, it has certain parameters. The railways take decisions taking into account passenger traffic. There cannot be any dispute that Nagpur is an important city.”
