Two persons were arrested by Unit IV of the Mumbai Police Crime Branch in connection with the murder of a local office-bearer of the BJP. The deceased,Vasantlal Zota (52),was also an office-bearer of the Dharavi Grain Dealers Association. Zota was found murdered in his office on February 20 in Dharavis Priyadarshani building with stab wounds on his neck and chest.
The accused have been identified as Mohammad Khalil Shaikh (33) and Mohammad Razzak (22). Crime Branch officers said the duo had confessed to the crime. A knife,a mobile phone and Rs 10,200,which were robbed from Zotas office, were also recovered from them.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy said the accused claimed they killed Zota as he allegedly sexually exploited a teenager they knew. However,Roy said that as of now,the police had not found any truth in the allegations.
The accused have told us that Zota used to exploit girls from poor families and these included a 19-year-old whom they knew. According to the accused, this continued for a long time and the girl could do little, said Roy.
Roy revealed that the accused got angry when Zota allegedly asked the girl to bring her sister along the next time they met.
From what they have told us,the accused got angry when they heard that Zota had told the girl to get her younger sister as well. They then devised a plan and told the girl to go ahead and meet him. They told her to open the door for them when Zota would be inside the room, Roy added.
The girl allegedly opened the door to Shaikh and Razzak who entered the office and then attacked Zota. He was stabbed three times and succumbed to his injuries later. Officers revealed that the knife used in the murder was made by Shaikh, who is a welder by profession.
Our informers told us that that Shaikh and Razzak were involved. We nabbed them and they will be produced in court on Friday. What the accused have told us is their version. We,however, have to get actual facts in order. We are probing the case, he said.
Roy also said that legal opinion will be sought to see if even the girls should be arrested. We will seek legal opinion before arresting the two girls as one of them is a minor , he said.
