Sewree police Saturday arrested two brothers for allegedly killing their stepfather over an argument. Their mother,as well as two other relatives, have also been booked for allegedly helping them hide the body. Interestingly, police claimed that an anonymous call to the first wife of the deceased,Tulsiram Chavan (50),blew the lid off the crime.
Police said Tulsiram stayed with his second wife Renu and her sons from her first marriage,Deepak (24)and Akash (26) in Brick Bunder,Sewree.
On the night of August 1,Deepak and Akash had a heated argument with Tulsiram and hit him on the head with a stone. He fell unconscious and died. Akash then called his father-in-law Shakeel Sheikh, who reached their house with his son Jafar, said an officer.
Akash,Deepak,Renu,Shakeel and Jafar then put the body in Shakeels Esteem car and drove to Besant Road in Sewree. At a secluded spot near a construction site, the suspects dug a pit and dumped the body in it.
Akash and Deepak stole some cement and wet concrete from the construction site and poured it into the pit, creating a slab that settled by the next morning, police said.
Tulsirams first wife,Jyoti, would call him occasionally, police said. When repeated calls (two-three days after the murder) received no response, she asked Renu and her sons about his whereabouts, but they feigned ignorance. However, she continued her efforts to trace him.
On Friday,Jyoti received a call from a man who refused to identify himself. He only told her that Renu,Akash and Deepak had killed Tulsiram and the spot where she could find the body. She came to us and we sent a team to the spot. After digging the slab,we found the body and sent it for postmortem, after which we picked up Renu,Deepak and Akash for questioning, said sub-inspector Amar Marathe.
The trio were subsequently arrested and charged with murder, destroying evidence and criminal conspiracy. Shakeel and Jafar, who are absconding, have also been booked for abetment.
