A 19-year-old boy allegedly hanged himself in his uncle’s Andheri residence on Sunday afternoon. Prima facie inquiries indicate that he had failed in his Class 11 exams, police said.
According to the MIDC police, the victim has been identified as Shani Hariprasad Sharma (19), a resident of Varanasi, who had come to stay with his uncle on Saturday.
“Shani’s uncle stays in Dindayal Nagar, Andheri (east) and has a barber shop nearby. When he came home on Sunday afternoon, he found that Shani had hanged himself from a beam in the ceiling using a rope. He alerted us,” said Senior Police Inspector Rajaram Mandge, MIDC police station.
The police rushed a team to the spot and Shani was taken to the Cooper Hospital where he was declared dead before admission. The police then contacted his parents in Varanasi and informed them about the incident.
“His parents have told us that he got his Class 11 results on Friday, and came to Mumbai the next day. We have not found any suicide note in the house and failing in his exams is believed to be the motive behind his suicide as of now,” Mandge added.
The police have registered an Accidental Death Report in the matter and are conducting further inquiries.
Shani’s body is currently being held at the Cooper Hospital for post mortem examination and his parents are on their way to Mumbai.
Detailed statements of Shani’s parents will be recorded once they reach the city, the police said.
