17-year-old boy dies after coming in contact with high-tension wire

Amid heavy rain and severe waterlogging across the city, a teenager died Tuesday morning after coming in contact with a high-tension electric wire in Bhandup, civic officials said Wednesday. At least 139 incidents of tree collapse, partial wall crash and short circuit incidents were reported between Tuesday and Wednesday morning, officials said.

According to officials, Deepak Ajay Ramlingam Pillai (17) was walking along a waterlogged street on LBS Marg in Bhandup around 11.35 am Tuesday when he came in contact with the high-tension wire and got shock. Passersby took him to the nearby Ayushman hospital, where he was declared dead.

Of the total cases, 93 were of tree collapse within 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Wednesday. According to officials, the highest number of tree collapse cases of 43 was reported in the western suburbs between Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by 27 cases in the island city division, and 23 cases in the eastern suburbs.

Apart from this, 14 cases of partial wall collapse incidents were also reported in the city during the same period, with seven in eastern suburbs and four in the island city region.

After heavy showers over the past five days, rainfall activity subdued considerably on Wednesday.

According to the IMD, between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Wednesday, the Santacruz station received 9.8 mm rain, while the Colaba coastal observatory registered mere 0.4 mm rain.

One dead in Thane

Intense rain affected normal life in Thane district on Wednesday, officials said. A man died after falling into a water-filled quarry, while an inundated bridge in Kalyan area was closed amid the downpour.

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) recorded 186.91 mm rainfall in 24 hours ending 8.30 am Wednesday.

The neighbouring Palghar district also witnessed heavy overnight showers, flooding low-lying areas and disrupting movement at several locations, they said.

“Due to the rise in the water level of the Bhatsa river, the bridge leading to Ju village (Thane district) has been completely submerged, cutting off the village from the outside world,” a district official said. PTI
