Commuters of a Virar local had a narrow escape Thursday as the train scheduled to reach Malad station at 3.23 pm was late and arrived minutes after a huge tree fell on the down slow line at 3.29 pm.
The tree fall on Western Railway (WR) during evening peak hours resulted in cancellation of 17 pairs of services and delayed 120 trains. Heavy rain is suspected to have uprooted the tree in a garden at the south end of platform 1.
An official who witnessed the fall said the tree tilted over the platform with its branches obstructing overhead equipment.
A power block was announced between 3.30 and 4.56 pm and the tree removed. However,a foot-long branch fell on the platform shed endangering commuters. Another power block of 30 minutes till 5.15 pm was needed to remove the branch. Four services on down line were stranded during the second block, delaying commuters returning home.
