The 135-year-old tower clock mounted over the main building of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) is undergoing repairs, said officials.
“The backside of the machine is facing some issues. We have taken up repair works, which is expected to take at least a week,” said Dr Shivraj Manaspure, chief public relation officer of Central Railway (Mumbai division).
The giant heritage tower clock weighs approximately 70 kg, said an official, adding that the frame on which the clock rests will also be repaired, so that it can take its load.
The clock — crafted by British time-keepers — was placed atop the iconic building in 1888, and it has rarely stopped working, barring a few incidents. In 2017, the weight tower clock had detached and fell on the building’s first floor, which took 15 days to be repaired.
