Over a decade after it was first conceived, the state government is now set to issue fresh tenders for the controversial Pedder Road flyover with senior government officials confirming that the documents are likely to be issued in a fortnight.

Mantralaya officials said that government was in the process of preparing the document and would issue fresh tenders for the flyover according to the original plan approved by the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

“The tender document will be issued in 15-20 days for the flyover. The original plan regarding the flyover is being retained in the tender,” said a senior government official.

The 4.2-km flyover proposed in 2000 for a quick solution to de-congest traffic along the busy South Mumbai road has been stuck due to local and political opposition.

When it was first announced, singer Lata Mangeshkar and her sister Asha Bhosale objected to the flyover passing close to their homes. The flyover, starting from the Haji Ali junction and ending at Tambe Chowk on Marine Drive ,was expected to cost Rs 205 crore. The government has held two public hearings about the flyover, both witnessing disruptions.

When asked if the tender would be issued soon,MSRDC managing director Bipin Shrimali replied “not yet” in an SMS message.

In December, island city Guardian Minister and NCP leader Jayant Patil created a flutter by saying the controversial project had been cancelled.

The flyover is also a point of disagreement between the two Thackeray cousins. While MNS chief Raj Thackeray has questioned why public disruptions were delaying crucial projects and asked the government to conduct hearings while building all flyovers last year, his cousin and Sena executive president Uddhav had said that government would take decision regarding the project and there was no need to politicise it.

Last year,MSRDC officials submitted revised plans to build the Pedder Road Flyover to the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) in which a viaduct was proposed to be built over the road itself. The viaduct will be built at the sharp curve at Chowpatty and will go along the entire Chowpatty seaface.
