Chaos engulfed Mangalore airport late on Monday night after a Dubai-bound Air India flight got delayed by 12 hours following technical glitches.
The IX 813 Mangalore-Dubai flight was scheduled for departure at 11:05 pm on Monday. However, after technical snags were identified, the aircraft was taken to Thiruvananthapuram for repairs. It was scheduled to return to Mangalore Tuesday morning at 9 am but it got delayed leaving 168 passengers stranded at the airport.
While Air India offered alternative options like a connecting flight on the Mangalore-Trivandrum-Dubai route or hotel accommodation, the passengers opted to wait for the arrival of the ferry flight.
However, the ferry flight, which was to be flown in from Trivandrum and was supposed to depart at 11:05 am on Tuesday, also got delayed. Finally, the ferry flight departed Mangalore airport at 12:10 pm with 161 passengers on board. According to airport authorities, seven passengers opted for rescheduling.
A statement by Air India said, “We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to our guests due to the delay of the Mangaluru-Dubai flight on 10th July. Due to a progressive technical snag, the flight was delayed by over 12 hours and took off at 12.10 hrs today. To facilitate the journey, an alternative aircraft was arranged, which was ferried from Thiruvananthapuram.”
It further added, “Despite offering alternative options like a connecting flight on the Mangalore-Trivandrum-Dubai route or hotel accommodation, guests opted to wait for the arrival of the ferry flight. Airline staff ensured that guests were provided refreshments at regular intervals. We sincerely appreciate the cooperation and understanding of our guests during this situation.”
Elaborating on the delay of IX 813, Air India said, “The flight was scheduled to depart at 11.05pm on July 10 and finally departed at 12.10pm on July 11 on a ferry flight that AIE sent from Thiruvananthapuram, which happens to be the maintenance base for the airline. The original aircraft that was scheduled to function as Flight IX813 is undergoing maintenance at TRV. Consequently flight IX 383 (or incoming flight IX 814 that gets renumbered as IX 383) that was scheduled to depart IXE at 9.15am for Dubai on July 11 is now scheduled to depart IXE at 6.45pm.”
