Party accuses Moghe of ‘anti-backward’ decisions; activists vandalise meeting venue

Republican Party of India (RPI) activists on Monday went on a rampage at the Alpa Bachat Bhavan Hall in protest against the “anti-backward class” decisions of Minister of State for Social Justice Shivajirao Moghe. The minister was at Alpa Bachat Bhavan for a meeting with representatives of various government departments under his ministry.

The activists barged into the hall and shouted slogans against Moghe. They also threw chairs and tables inside the hall, causing tension for sometime. Koregaon Park police have registered an offence against them.

RPI city unit president Parshuram Wadekar said,“We strongly condemn the decisions taken by Moghe. There are as many as 371 hostels for scheduled caste students in the state but it has come to notice that many other students are allowed to stay at these hostels. The government had,on May 16,decided to reserve 80 per cent seats in these hostels for SC students but Moghe stayed this decision a few days later.”

“RPI activists had sought a discussion with Moghe on the issue. However, the minister did not give any chance for discussion. The activists vandalised the venue out of resentment. A police complaint has been lodged against them. The party will back them if they take any action.”

Meanwhile,Moghe steered clear of any mention of the RPI protest at a press meet held later. He reviewed the hostel facilities for disabled students in various homes run by the department and discussed various schemes under the department. He said that he was planning an online system for caste verification of students to reduce rush at the office.
