Workshop on learning disability held

Learning disability is not a problem with intelligence but difference in the brain which affects how information is received, processed or communicated by a child.

Learning disability (LD) is not a problem with intelligence but difference in the brain which affects how information is received, processed or communicated by a child. This was informed by Ruchika Sachdev,a Delhi based expert in special education. Ruchika was the resource person at a workshop on learning disability held at Potentials,a city school for special children.

“Parents should keep a close watch on the milestones of their child. When does the child hold neck, speak, walk, cut his teeth and any kind of delay should not be ignored. In case of children with learning disability, lack of speech is one clear cut indication and unlike autistic children,LDs are very social children. Children with LD show indications like they confuse between left and right, spelling the words in reverse etc,” informed Ruchika. She added: “The common complaint that parents of wards who have LD get from school is that their child has a capability to do a lot but is not performing. There is a huge gap between what the child can speak orally and write. Children with LD are usually equipped with average to above average skills. These children are very intelligent and it is easy for them to reproduce what they have learnt orally. They, however, falter when asked to read.”

Advising parents on how to proceed with an LD child,Ruchika said: “There is no cure for LD for this is no disease. It is a condition and we can simply improve the condition through various therapies and intervention. This can be done to such an extent that a person suffering from LD is as good as a normal child.” Citing examples of some of famous LDs Ruchika said,“ LD is of three kinds dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalcula. Abhishek Bachchan,Tom Cruise are some of the classical examples of LDs.”
