UT Education dept fails to appoint ‘scrutiny officers’

With admissions in most private schools drawing to a close, the future of students from the economically weaker sections hangs in balance.

With admissions in most private schools drawing to a close, the future of students from the economically weaker sections (EWS) hangs in balance. While the Education department had gone on record saying it will appoint “scrutiny officers” that will form a part of the admission committees in schools to ensure justice to students belonging to the EWS,the decision is yet to be executed.

Schools which had earlier not adhered to the administration’s norm regarding admitting 15 per cent students from the EWS were instructed by the administration to follow the guidelines in the coming session.

Belying the claims of the Education department, however,D S Bedi, director,Shivalik Public School, which violated the rule said: “We have not received any notification from the Education department. The admissions are taking place since the last two months but no officer has visited us with any instructions.”

He added that of the 31 schools that are part of the Independent Schools’ Federation,no school has reported receiving any directions. Vanita Arora, principal,Bhavan Vidyalya, which has around 4 per cent students from the EWS confirms Bedi’s statement: “We have not got any orders from the department nor has any officer visited us.”
