Traffic congestion seems to be the top priority of Ludhiana Police Commissioner Nirmal Singh Dhillon.
Traffic has increased a lot in Ludhiana. The roads are chocking. It is a serious problem and it must be dealt with as a top priority, said the Police Commissioner, who started his career as an advocate in the city many years back.
Asserting that he himself feels this congestion when he travels on the city roads,Dhillon said,Over 12 lakh vehicles are on Ludhiana roads and more are likely to be added in the coming years. So looking at the rising congestion,I have increased the strength of traffic cops at the traffic bottlenecks. Earlier, about 180 traffic cops were deployed at various chowks which has now been increased to nearly 220.
Sources maintain that traffic lights at 24 points of the city are out of order which are another hurdle in controlling traffic.
The police authorities have also written to MC Commissioner Rahul Tewari, seeking an early repair of the faulty lights as they are responsible for the maintenance.
The increasing number of cars on the roads is a major reason for the congestion. In middle-class families as well, two cars has become a norm and in upper middle class, many families own more than eight cars as well.
Pending development projects is yet another reason for traffic congestion because the projects of flyovers on Bharat Nagar Chowk,Bhai Bala Chowk, rail over bridges on Pakhowal road,Shastri Nagar are only in files.
