If the police plan materialises, the entire city will soon be under round-the-clock surveillance through the close circuit television (CCTV) cameras. The process has already begun with two institutions getting direct link to the police control room (PCR) through Internet.

To enhance the surveillance in the city, the city police have asked all the institutes to install CCTV cameras on their premises.

Later, these cameras would be linked with the police control room so that the police can keep a watch on the movements of the people.

Upbeat over the initial success of the move,PCR DSP Sandeep Sharma told Newsline,“The Durga Mata Mandir and the AC Market in Bhadaur House have been linked to PCR through CCTV cameras.”

Giving the details, the DSP said,“Being the biggest city of the state, the police cannot be omnipresent in Ludhiana. Though we have PCR personnel who immediately rush to the scene of crime,if we get first-hand information from an authentic a source such as CCTV cameras, our response time can be improved.”

Sharma said that he had visited nearly 150 government and private institutions in the city and tried to convince them to install CCTV cameras. “They have given us a positive feedback,” he added.

According to the plan, after the institutions install the CCTV cameras, they would be asked to install Internet servers along with antennas which would be linked up to the PCR. Once the paraphernalia is set up,the police can easily get images from these CCTV cameras on the monitors in their control room through servers.

He said,“We also plan to put up CCTV cameras at traffic lights to keep a watch on traffic violators.”

The DSP said they would keep the record of the CCTV camera footage for over a month. “We know it’s a long process but it has already started rolling and we hope to get it completed as soon as possible. SSP R K Jaiswal is taking a keen interest in the matter to make it a success,” Sharma added.
