The case may sound strange but is true. Jaswant Singh,a resident of Tiahara village and a farmer by profession has been booked for abetment to suicide of a person who as per the police was caught red handed while trying to steal from Singhs house.
Sub-Inspector Bawa Singh who is the inquiry officer in the case informed,Dhanna Singh alias Parminder, aged 22,a tailor in the village and he had gone to deliver some clothes at Jaswant Singhs residence yesterday. Jaswant Singh and his family were not at home and when they came back they found Dhanna Singh rummaging through their almirahs and clothes inside the house.
The police officer added that,On seeing this,Jaswant Singh began beating up Dhanna Singh, calling him a thief. Basically in the last one month alone, thieves have stuck twice at Jaswant Singhs home. In the first strike, the thieves took away Rs 40,000 and in another strike, the thrives decamped with some ornaments. Jaswant Singh blamed Dhanna Singh for both the thefts as he used to come to their home quiet often to deliver clothes.
It is after the chaos broke out that villagers began gathering. The villagers then asked Jaswant Singh not to beat Dhanna Singh and rather hand him over to the police. Dhanna Singh was made to sit inside a room while the police was informed. Fearing police action and social pressure,Dhanna Singh consumed some pesticide lying inside the room. Jaswant Singh rushed him to local Civil Hospital where Dhanna Singh breathed his last. Dhanna Singhs mother,Kamaljeet Kaur has lodged a complaint against Jaswant Singh and we have registered a case of abetment to suicide against him, added Bawa Singh.
