Teams start arriving for National Youth Festival

The Punjab Agricultural University campus saw the arrival of teams from various states on Thursday for National Youth Festival.

While the teams from Tripura, Nagaland, Daman Diu and Dadar and Nagar Haveli reached city on Thursday, Meghalya, Mizoram, West Bengal and union territory Lakshadweep Islands have cancelled their participation. They have cited ‘functions in their own states’ as reason for non-attendance.
The teams were received at the railway station by the assistant directors of youth services on duty while the participants from Punjab team have been asked to reach PAU campus on their own.
Also the teams from neighbouring states such as Delhi, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand would be arriving through buses and reach campus on their own. “We are in touch with contingent leaders and if there is any issue they will be ask us,” said Davinder Singh Lote, assistant director youth service.
On the other hand students of Punjab team from Hoshiarpur, Sangrur, Patiala and other districts were seen struggling at the entrance of PAU. “We were told to reach the Student’s Home in PAU but no one is guiding us. It is such a big campus and no one is there to guide us,” said a participant.
A girls team from Hoshirapur said, “There is no one to guide us. How will we know where the Student’s Home is. We have reached the campus on our own. Now at least there should be someone to guide us in varsity.”
Out of 35 expected teams from all states and UTs, now only 31 teams will take part in the event. The VIPs and recipient of National Youth Award (32) and representatives of youth organisations (6) will be reaching by flight through Chandigarh.
Meanwhile, bollywood singer Sonu Nigam will be perform on January 15 at PAU campus. Minister of Sports Jitendra Singh and Governor Shivraj V Patil will preside over the opening ceremony on January 12 while Punjab Chief Minister and deputy Chief Minister at closing ceremony on January 16. The number of rooms booked at five star hotels went up from 13 to 20 on Thursday and 66 other rooms in other high end hotels have been booked. “The numbers will further go up as we are receiving more and more arrival confirmation from dignitaries,” said a member of accommodation committee.
