To press their demands for a clean environment, students and teachers of Baba Isher Singh Public Senior Secondary School protested outside the Municipal Corporation today.

Amrik Singh Nagra, head of Physical department of the school, said: “A mandi is held near the school every Sunday. The vendors do not dispose of the stale vegetables and other garbage, which raises a stink. Our children have to bear the stink throughout the week. The condition gets bad, especially if it rains. The smell gets so bad that it becomes difficult to breathe and one often feels nauseous. Students also complain of headache and also nausea at times.”

Another teacher said: “We have asked the MC authorities many times to look into the problem, but to no effect.”

Ishmeet,a Class III student said: “Whenever there is wind, the school is filled with a stink. We do not feel comfortable.”

Nagra said the problem has aggravated beyond proportions and they fear that children might fall sick one day.

Another teacher said: “The stink also makes it impossible to eat food in the canteen. The MC authorities should look into the problem.”

The situation is similar in other schools of the city. While a garbage dump rests beside CFC School in BRS Nagar,Kundan Vidya Mandir too has a dump near its gate number 4.

Near Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School,BRS Nagar too,a garbage dump has come up within a week.

At Sri Guru Harikrishan Public Senior Secondary School,Dugri,a garbage dump is not something new. Students and teachers have complained about the stink many times earlier.
